RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
