Puzzling Pink Ooze on Remote Tasmanian Beach Prompts Concerns of Potential Algal Bloom
Officials in Tasmania are striving to determine a magenta ooze that has surfaced on a isolated coast, with some scientists anxious it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Broad Occurrence Across Coastline
The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a portion of Randalls Bay about 60 kilometers south of the capital. A similar sludge has also been recorded on areas of another local beach and a separate bay.
Samples Gathered for Examination
Specimens have been taken and sent to the regulatory body for examination. A official remarked that "algae outbreaks are a normal phenomenon in reaction to variations in nutrients, warmth, rainfall or light".
"They are at times called red or pink tides because the proliferations can turn the water reddish," the spokesperson noted. "Not all phytoplankton events are harmful, with many species functioning as a major source of food for creatures in the oceanic food chain."
"The most common cause of red tides in Tasmanian waters is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause glowing light shows at night."
Increasing Frequency Linked to Climate Change
Algal blooms happen naturally but their frequency has grown in the past few years, partially due to global warming and environmental waste that join together to create nutrient-rich waters ideal for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that normally act as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a bloom, there is a quick expansion in their populations that disrupts the proper operation of aquatic systems.
These phenomena have been likened to underwater bushfires and can continue to grow as long as the environment is suitable. In severe cases, vulnerable aquatic environments can be devastated as marine life is killed or suffocated, supplying more food for the outbreak.
Past Severe Bloom in a neighboring state
A southern state recently confronted a catastrophic algae outbreak along its southern coastline after a string of marine heatwaves, which expanded across thousands of square kilometres. The bloom left surfers with irritated eyes and severe coughing and may have caused the death of up to 250,000 marine animals across numerous types, according to government calculations.
Scientist Opinion on the Current Case
A marine expert, who helped investigate the start of the previous outbreak said, based on photos of the Tasmanian outbreak, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"We have seen numerous of these blooms around Tassie of late," she added.
The scientist said sea sparkle did not produce poisons like the organism involved in the previous devastating algal bloom, but it does ingest tiny creatures and "numerous fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were particularly vulnerable.
"It's common to observe a bloom of this algae after a proliferation of a different species, or an event such as a fish reproduction," she noted.
Appeals for Response and Safety Concerns
Lilly Henley, who gathered specimens of the rosy slime in Tasmania, stated it looked like the possible outbreak had "grown significantly" and indicated the salmon farming industry was the most likely culprit, pointing to like situations overseas.
"Therefore we needs to issue a clear message here, the officials and the EPA need to react to this. We need to examine the samples we've gathered and we need to notify the people here," she stated.
The scientist said she had worries for public safety after noticing a tingling sensation along her arms and face while being exposed with contaminated seawater.
Reports of Deceased Animals and Calls for Official Intervention
An environmental foundation has documented lifeless animals and deceased marine life appearing on the coast, with a veteran activist labeling the situation as an "environmental emergency" and demanding the state premier to inspect and "lead the response that officials must be making".
"He needs to understand this is a catastrophe in the happening, economically as well as environmentally."
Government Reaction
Talking with journalists, the leader said he was uninformed of any relationships between the algal bloom and the salmon industry, stating laboratory analysis was necessary before conclusions could be reached.
"We need to ensure our waterways are safe for nature and viable," he added.
"Numerous shorelines across Tasmania are our resources and we need to make sure the public and our economy can operate side-by-side to use our aquatic resources efficiently and responsibly."
